Steroids are dangerous even if they are used legally. I was offered steroids to help fix my shoulder, but I declined them. My sisters husband and their son, both have kidney problems and underwent steroid treatment. Even under medical supervision, a person then has to be weaned off of them, you cant just stop the treatment cold turkey.
With his neck injuries etc, it would be quite normal for him to have steroid treatment anyway!
