Why no "warning shot?" We could've dropped it onto a more remote region where the destructive power could be seen without killing many (even a small military post). The Japanese were already considering a surrender before we dropped the bomb, just showing the power of it without killing all those people would've had the same effect. We've had the bomb for over sixty years. We've used it on one country (twice). We've openly tested the bombs many more times. No one is unaware of its effects. Despite all of that, in every war since WWII we have seen our troops attacked, often by "insurgents", "guerillas" or terrorists. In none of these wars has there been a surrender simply because we have the bomb. Therefore, there is little, if any, basis to conclude that Japan would have surrendered just because they saw a demonstration of the A-bomb. That's not really true, IMO. There's a huge difference between knowing a country has a bomb and seeing a country use it, even if they use it in a remote area. It would have been a demonstration of ability which could possibly have had a profound effect.

Please refer to the doctor's point that they saw us use it on Hiroshima and still didn't surrender until we used it again on Nagasaki.
In addition, please note my reference to the fact that we have publicly tested the A-bomb (and the H-bomb) many times in the past sixty years, in full view of the world. Despite the whole world seeing what our bombs can do and have done, we still do not see immediate surrender (or, in the case of Vietnam any surrender) in our modern wars.
Each of the above tends to evince that a mere demonstration of the bomb would not have caused them to surrender.

Sometimes I wonder what the point of testing them was in the first place. We never used them but when we first created them.

Aside from your semantics in terms of definition, what do you consider the difference between soldiers and militarily-trained terrorists? One officially represents the will and prerogative of a nation and the other is a radical force. If anything, they would have been less likely than more modern opponents to surrender, given their then-unfamiliarity with the weapon. Not to mention they invented the Kamikaze. not to mention they started the fucking war.

Maybe its time to use one again to let the Muslims know we mean business. Let's see how serious they really are about dying for Allah after we nuke, say, Iran.

There were many factors in the surrender, and there was a lot of infighting and debate that needed to be ironed out. You also have to consider the Russians, which happened after the bombs and may have been the thing that truly made them surrender.

I posted a descrption of Iran from a friend of mine who went there a year or so ago and had a great time, and was approachd by many friendly people who wanted to talk to him about the West. He finished up his trip with snowboarding just outside Tehran. Using nuclear weapons in this day and age, where the US has an enormously large arsenal and therefore a variety of alternatives to nuclear weapons, would provoke an extremely poor reaction from even its closest allies, not to mention its own citizens. Its not even a realistic option.

Are you implying that the fact that the US was able to demonstrate a highly destructive weapon twice within three days wasn't a deciding factor? I'm not discounting the threat of a Russian invasion, but I believe that it was weighed with the consideration that the US could lay waste to much of Japan with it's new super weapon to pave the way for an easier invasion by any of the Allies.

I would not want to nuke Iran......the under 30 crowd outnumbers the adults either 5 or 6 to 1 and are almost all pro western ideals and prefer a secular government. it's just a matter of time till they win out. Iran and Iraq may end up being great allies someday.

The difference, M E M, is that for all the venting of "bomb the muslims" here, myself included at times, it's with the confidence that we'd never do it, very likely not even in the event nukes were used on us. As I've argued before, having those weapons, and having our enemies (specifically muslim governments and islamic radical groups, along with the Russians, Chinese and N.Koreans) know we won't use them is dangerous, and emboldens them to attack us with impunity, whereas if we had a willingness to use them, they would be respectful of that, and we would be a lot safer. We may be so "civilized" that we would willingly allow ourselves to be destroyed, rather than retaliate proportionately, or act with the force necessary to prevent it. On the topic issue of whether bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki was the right decision, the cost of invading and conquering Japan's home islands (based on their fierce to-the-last-man fighting at Iwo Jima and Okinawa) was estimated would cost about 1 million U.S. lives, and at least 3 million Japanese lives, and would have extended the war as long as 10 more years. Even after Hiroshima, the Japanese leadership was determined to fight on. I think we did what was necessary to end the war. Which minimized the devastation on both sides. And Hiroshima, far from being an innocent civilian target, was the staging port for the invasions of Korea and Manchuria. Hiroshima at the time it was bombed housed 40,000 troops among its 160,000 total population. It was a legitimate military target, despite the liberal propaganda otherwise. And far more humanely than Japan would have ever done for us, we completely rebuilt their infrastructure after the war. And Germany's as well. Making them our two largest economic rivals for more than 60 years. I think liberal revisionists have a tendency overlook how humane we were to the Japanese, and to overlook how unthinkably cruel the Japanese were in World War II, to us, and every nation they invaded. It's an endless cycle, of revisionism over the last few decades, blaming the United States and other Western nations for responding, while ignoring the aggression and cruelty of the true aggressors who began each conflict. Or to put it another way: Taking America for granted

But you turned me out baby
You dropped a bomb on me, baby You dropped a bomb on me.
But you turned me on baby.
You dropped a bomb on me, baby You dropped a bomb on me.
You were my thrills, you were my pills You dropped a bomb on me

You dropped a bomb on me, baby You dropped a bomb on me.
Just like Adam and Eve. Said you'd set me free, you took me to the sky I'd never been so high
You were my pills, you were my thrills You were my hope baby, you were my smoke
You dropped a bomb on me, hey baby You dropped a bomb on me, baby You dropped a bomb on me.
But you turned me out, baby You dropped a bomb on me, baby You dropped a bomb on me.
But you turned me on, baby You dropped a bomb on me, baby You dropped a bomb on me.
You dropped a bomb on me, baby You dropped a bomb on me, baby You dropped a bomb on me.
We were in motion, felt like lotion You were the girl for me You were the first explosion, Turned out to be corrosion You were the first for me.
But you turned me out, baby You dropped a bomb on me, baby You dropped a bomb on me. You dropped a bomb on me, baby You dropped a bomb on me.
I won't forget what you done to me, baby. You dropped a bomb on me, baby You dropped a bomb on me. You dropped a bomb on me, baby You dropped a bomb on me.
I, I I, I I I won't forget it I, I I, I I I won't forget it

Lets dance in style, lets dance for a while Heaven can wait were only watching the skies Hoping for the best but expecting the worst Are you going to drop the bomb or not?
Let us die young or let us live forever We dont have the power but we never say never Sitting in a sandpit, life is a short trip The musics for the sad men
Can you imagine when this race is won Turn our golden faces into the sun Praising our leaders were getting in tune The musics played by the madmen
Forever young, I want to be forever young Do you really want to live forever, forever and ever
Some are like water, some are like the heat Some are a melody and some are the beat Sooner or later they all will be gone Why dont they stay young
Its so hard to get old without a cause I dont want to perish like a fading horse Youth is like diamonds in the sun And dimonds are forever
So many adventures couldnt happen today So many songs we forgot to play So many dreams are swinging out of the blue We let them come true

We could've dropped it onto a more remote region where the destructive power could be seen without killing many (even a small military post). The Japanese were already considering a surrender before we dropped the bomb, just showing the power of it without killing all those people would've had the same effect.
Considering that Japan didn't surrender after Hiroshima, your suggestion is already full of holes. It wasn't until after the second attack that the Japanese decided to surrender. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080812/ap_on_re_as/japan_tojo_s_diary Japanese World War II leader Hideki Tojo wanted to keep fighting even after U.S. atomic bombs destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, accusing surrender proponents of being "frightened," a newly released diary reveals.
Excerpts from the approximately 20 pages written by Tojo in the final days of the war and held by the National Archives of Japan were published for the first time in several newspapers Tuesday.
"The notes show Tojo kept his dyed-in-the-wool militarist mentality until the very end," said Kazufumi Takayama, the archives curator, who confirmed the accuracy of the published excerpts. "They are extremely valuable."
Tojo, executed in 1948 after being convicted of war crimes by the Allies, was prime minister during much of the war. The notes buttress other evidence that Tojo was fiercely opposed to surrender despite the hopelessness of Japan's war effort.
"We now have to see our country surrender to the enemy without demonstrating our power up to 120 percent," Tojo wrote on Aug. 13, 1945, just two days before Japan gave up. "We are now on a course for a humiliating peace, or rather a humiliating surrender."
Tojo also criticized his colleagues, accusing government leaders of "being scared of enemy threats and easily throwing their hands up." Surrender proponents were "frightened by 'the new type of bomb' and terrified by the Soviet Union's entry into the war," he wrote.
The stridency of the writings is remarkable considering they were penned just days after the U.S. atomic bombs incinerated Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing some 200,000 people and posing the threat of the complete destruction of Japan. At the time, Japan had begun arming children, women and the elderly with bamboo spears, in addition to the aircraft and other forces it had marshaled, to defend the homeland against a ground invasion.
The notes first came to the notice of the government when Tojo's defense lawyer, Ichiro Kiyose, gave them to the Justice Ministry. The ministry transferred the papers in 1999 to the National Archives, which made them available to researchers last year.
The papers add to Tojo's well-known writings penned while he was jailed in Sugamo Prison after Japan's surrender until his execution.
The diary shows Tojo remained convinced of the justice and necessity of Japan's brutal march through Asia and its disastrous decision to draw the United States into the war by bombing Pearl Harbor.
On Aug. 10 — the day after the Nagasaki bombing — Tojo wrote that the purpose of the war was to "maintain stability in East Asia and defend our country."
"Many soldiers and the people cannot bring themselves to die until the goal is achieved," he wrote.
Still, Tojo — who apparently wrote the diary for himself rather than as an argument to his contemporaries — said he would accept in silence the decision to surrender, which was made by government leaders in the presence of then-Emperor Hirohito.
"Now that the diplomatic steps have been taken after the emperor's judgment, I have decided to refrain from making any comments about it, though I have a separate view," Tojo wrote.
On Aug. 14, 1945, the day before Japan surrendered, Tojo wrote in a note addressed to a former aide that he took "moral responsibility for causing useless deaths, even though they were meant to be sacrifice for a great cause."
"I am determined to offer an apology with my death," he wrote, presaging his unsuccessful suicide attempt in September 1945 before he was arrested.

My brother and I were discussing this the other day. We were both surprised by how little people knew of actual history and went instead with a revisionist view that decided that America should apologize for everything it's ever done. The whole BS about the fact that we should have bombed a military target is overwhelmingly ignorant of the facts. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were military targets. Nagasaki held the shipyards used to build the Imperial Navy while Hiroshima was the HQ for two Japanese Army units and held a shitload of supplies for the Imperial military. The Japanese, much like the Germans, were putting their military assets in close to the civilian populations in order to dissuade any Allied bombings.
Secondly, my brother found out while he was in the Army in the 90's that before the decision to drop the bomb was made, the US Army, in preparation for the invasion, pre-ordered the Purple Heart medals they believed they would need. By the time my brother had left the service, around 95 or so, the US Army was still using the same supply of Purple Hearts that they had ordered fifty years before. Those damn things went through to the end of WWII, through Korea, Vietnam, and even the first Iraq War and still hadn't been used up.

Hiroshima at the time it was bombed housed 40,000 troops among its 160,000 total population. It was a legitimate military target, despite the liberal propaganda otherwise. The 40,000 figure is from the book Hiroshima, by John Hersey, a famous sympathetic account of the bombing, seen through the eyes of four people who were in Hiroshima the day of the explosion. And their struggle afterward in the weeks and years after the explosion. But even this account still acknowledges the large amount of Japanese troops in the city, and the city's role in the invasions of Korea and Manchuria. See also The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang, to fully wipe away the liberal image of the Japanese as innocent victims of American racism. The Japanese have never been held accountable for their W W II racism toward every nation they occupied, even 65-plus years later.

I hate brown people, and want to smear that bigotry onto WB. We get it.

Why do you try to hard to get thedoctors acceptance? A quick look at our exchanged posts over the last 6 years quickly disproves that allegation. Why do you waste all your time trolling 12-plus hours a day on a message board, or jerking off with crusty socks in your mother's basement, when you should be out looking for a job?

You mean the ones where you act like a scorned lover? Why do you waste all your time trolling 12-plus hours a day on a message board, or jerking off with crusty socks in your mother's basement, when you should be out looking for a job? I win again!
