You, readers, already know which factors come into play for this big of a project. Still, I'm going to pass to you what Robert has said over at IESB after asking his Warner Bros sources. One big fact is apparently Warner Bros wants this film in production by March of 2008. They already have a finished script which they've already approved from scribes Kiernan and Michele Mulroney. They want this film ready to be released by Summer 2009 and they are taking a possible looming strike into account. Insiders in Warner Bros have also suggested this film will be the launching point for the DC characters of Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Aquaman. Expect to see their characters in this film before they get their own theatrical franchises. So which factors come into play? Christian Bale and the Batman producers are one major point of interest for Warner Bros. Nolan, Bale and company are on board/contract for 3 Batman movies and JLA would play a part in disrupting that deal. Will they be interested in more films under a new contract if Bale appears as Bats in this JLA movie? Where does that figure into a 3rd DARK KNIGHT film appearing by 2010-11. A new contract is needed and what would it take to get both Bale and Nolan back under the contract seeing how they've both dedicated so much time to the franchise thus far. Another factor is Bryan Singer and the Superman franchise. Bryan's camp is already working on SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL which is scheduled to hit theaters in Summer 2009. This is the same exact time Warner Bros wants the JLA movie to appear. Routh and Singer, much like the Batman group, are signed on for 3 films. The future JLA movie again comes into play here. Over the next few months, we're going to be seeing some news in regards to both these franchises (Nolan's DARK KNIGHT and Singer's SUPERMAN) because judging by what Warner Bros is telling Robert Sanchez at IESB, they really want a JLA movie fast tracked... Now, it's time for your thoughts..

The article is wrong about Bale, he signed a contract for three Batman movies and and optional Superman vs Batman or Justice League movie, same with Routh.
I think DC is getting ahead of themselves with all of this. They should release the JLA movie, see how it does then start planning other franchises.

I can't see Bale and Routh playing Bats/Supes in a JLA film. Would it be cool? Of course, but as noted above, it would prolly disrupt filming for both franchises. Additionally, most actors are afraid of being pegged into a role after the usual three that they sign on for, so getting them to sign on for a 4th time in a movie where they technically aren't the leads would be near impossible. Besides, as much as I love Bale as Bats (and, yes, Routh did a solid job as Supes despite the movie itself being dull) I don't think a JLA movie would suffer if two other actors took over the roles for an ensemble movie that JLA would end up being. At worst there would be comparisons, but that wouldn't stop movie goers from seeing it - only it being a sucky film could do that.

well, at this point, it might actually be easier to make if they cut both of them out of it. I know it's the big fanboy thing to have them all in there, but with the schedules like they are, and the way WB is trying to shove this thing out there, it won't work with the established actors.
and honestly, Bale's Batman would eat Routh's Superman alive onscreen. so, the two of them wouldn't fit together well at all.

Ok, maybe its just the fangirl in me, but I can't see them doing this without two of the big 3... and honestly, Bale's Batman would eat Routh's Superman alive onscreen. so, the two of them wouldn't fit together well at all.

They have so much invested in the individual franchises that they would seriously not want to derail them. If they felt putting them in a JLA movie would do that, they would not think twice about doing it! Unlike a team movie like X-Men, there are so many strong characters in the JLA that could hold down a solo movie, so they would not worry too much about pulling those two. I could easily see Flash and Wonder Woman being the prime players to make up for both having so much trouble being brought to the big screen like DC wanted to!

I totally see what you are saying, Fred, but its not just about me wanting them to both be in it - I meant it when I said that I can't see them not having the trinity in it. Personally, the only time I have been interested in checking out the book was when each of the big three were present. That aside, in recent years, more people have become familiar with JLA through the cartoon where Supes and Bats were prominent characters. I think they might expect those two to be in a big budget movie as well. Unfortunately, when I think of the JLA without Bats or Supes, I remember the unbelievably cheesy TV series - putting in second string characters - save the Flash - and those incredibly cheesy costumes - ugh! I cringe at the idea of a repeat of that.

If you look at it that way, you have to ask why characters like Gambit etc, or more classic characters like Beast and Angel werent in the first X-Men film.
When translating a comic book to film, what came before, and what fans expect, are the two things movie makers consider least.
Granted Batman and Supes in the movie would probably draw more, but if it meant them not doing or doing sequels to solo movies late, they would more than likely go with dropping them.
The rationale being that they would make more money that way, even if JLA didnt draw as much as a JLA with them in it!

As long as they feature a good degree of old school top names (WW, GL, GA, Flash, Hawkman etc), and a mix of newer members like Black Lightning, it will have enough characters that people will recognise!

As for the rest of the fans - any fan of the X-men (which I do like, just not as much as I like DC's trinity) has to recognize that Wolverine is more popular than the Beast - just as, say, a Green Lantern fan has to be aware that Batman is more popular. If GL got cut, it would be less surprising than Batman or Supes getting cut. The lineup used in X-Men was not the line up used in the "more popular than Superman or Batman" comics or the line up used in the "popular" cartoons! Cyclops/Wolverine/Jean/Iceman/Rogue/Storm - all popular and all in the movie! And which cartoon are you thinking of? The one in the mid-90's? Or the more modern one? I still think that the trinity should be in the JLA movie though. So there!

I'm thinking of the cartoon that has Gambit in it.
You know, the Gambit who is the second most popular X-Man after Wolverine (or at least he was back the, I have no idea about now).
And back to your argument about you expect them to be in it as a fangirl because they are so popular.
Well there are probably a dozen more popular X-Men that were not in that movie.
Its not about popularity with fanboys/girls, its about accuracy.
Based on your popularity idea, then the film would be ok to have the trinity plus the rest of the team being made up of JL Detroit?
Would that make it better than the JL tv movie just cause the three tenors were in it?
Justice League the comic has stood without all three of those characters in it, and its only been since the Morrison run that they have "had to" be in the comic.
Some of the most enjoyable issues of JLA featured only one or none of them (the Giffen run comes to mind, which only featured Batman).
I'd say, as long as WW is in it, that would be enough for the average fanboy/girl!
