I think they could have gotten away with adapting Death of Superman, Funeral for a Friend and Adventures #500 in one movie, then Reign of the Supermen in another, if they really wanted to. But nah, it felt like they didn't care much for the comics and didn't even bother following them.
Obviously they'd have to cut and change a lot of stuff but it would have been nice if they had at least captured the spirit of the original story, instead of going with something completely different.
