The Japanese are part of the free market, aren't they?

It's what happened in the 70's and 80's. The Japanese automakers came in and stole the American drivers by building more efficient cars. The US car makers were slow to adjust then, and didn't need to adjust after a while when gas prices dropped again. Instead, Americans went back to gas guzzling with SUV's. We're in a better situation now for the Japanese to take the lead because their factories are now here in the US and employing American citizens. Also, GM and Ford have made pretty good strides to make more efficient cars that get 30 or more mpg highway not to mention hybrids and GM's Volt. Chrysler, on the other hand, has been mostly stuffing Hemi's in their vehicles.
