Twenty-three-year-old Emily Streb was arraigned yesterday in charges of having an affair with her 16-year-old special ed student who suffers from depression and other problems. Streb was the 16-year-old's music teacher and allegedly had sex with him multiple times.

The boy had reportedly denied claims to the school's investigator but then later admitted something was going on to his mother, who then turned and called the police. The judge released Streb without setting bail but has issued a full order of protection, barring her from contacting the student.

In a tragic twist to a familiar story, a teenager who had sex with his married 30-year-old teacher was fatally shot outside the woman's home, and authorities have charged the woman's husband.

"You see all this stuff with teachers involved with their students. It just comes up time after time on the national news," said Norman McLean, father of suspect Eric McLean. But this time, he said, someone "actually died over it."

McLean's wife, Erin, had completed half of a one-year teaching internship at West High School, where she met the 18-year-old Sean Powell last fall.

Powell's mother, who gave him up for adoption a dozen years ago but re-established contact in 2005, said her son acknowledged having an affair with a teacher.

A sixth-grade science teacher who was accused of having sex with a 13-year-old student has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Rachel L. Holt, 35, had pleaded guilty to second-degree rape. She sobbed in court Friday as Superior Court Judge Calvin L. Scott gave her the mandatory minimum sentence.

Prosecutors had wanted Scott to sentence Holt to the maximum of 25 years.

Holt was initially charged with 28 counts of first-degree rape.

Police accused her of having sex with the boy that many times during an intense weeklong affair. She was also accused of plying the boy with alcohol and allowing him to drive her car.

Holt's attorney, John S. Malik, said the sentence was much longer than what teachers convicted in similar cases got. He reviewed 40 such cases and found the average was 18 months to two years.

In her brief comments to the court, Holt apologized "to everyone who suffered" as a result of her actions, including the victim and his family.

The victim's uncle, who spoke on behalf of the family, asked for the maximum sentence, saying Holt had tarnished the reputation of teachers and violated his nephew's trust.

A teacher accused of having sex with a former student who was shot to death outside her home tried to commit suicide five days later with a drug overdose, Nashville police said.

Nashville's 911 call center was contacted on March 15 by a Knoxville police officer, who said Erin McLean's family there believed she had taken an overdose.

Paramedics and a Nashville officer went to the home where McLean was staying and reported that it appeared she had attempted to commit suicide with prescription drugs, police spokeswoman Kristin Mumford said.

Mumford said McLean was taken to a Nashville hospital and later released.

The teacher's husband, Eric McLean, is charged with murder in the shooting death of 18-year-old Sean Powell outside the McLeans' home March 10. Powell was a former student at West High School in Knoxville, where Erin McLean was a teaching intern.

An Upper East Side private-school head mistress faces up to 18 years in prison after her conviction yesterday for sexually preying on a young male student.

After deliberating for six days, a Manhattan Supreme Court jury found Lina Sinha, 40 - a respected educator with two master's degrees from Columbia - guilty of two counts of oral sodomy and one count of felony witness bribing stemming from her attempts to cover up her crimes.

The dark-haired beauty, a one-time director of the Montessori School of New York on East 55th Street, was being held last night after the trial judge set her bail at $3.5 million.

The victim was only 13 when the pe dophile principal - at 29, more than twice his age - sat him on a white porcelain sink in a rear classroom of the school and gave him his first oral sex. "She told me that she loved me and that one day we were going to get mar ried," the victim - now a cop, 24, in Queens - told jurors.

He had yet to shave. He only stood as high as her chest. Still, Sinha promised him children - the boy to be named after him.

She taught him to reach her bedroom above the school by sneaking past the security cameras installed by her parents, who owned the institution. She stocked her room with video games and kept him there weekends at a time.

The cop compellingly testified to these early trysts, which eventually evolved into a twisted, nine-year relationship with Sinha.

Sinha was only unmasked after she waged a virulent campaign of false rape and assault accusations - including in-person interviews with cops and hysterical calls to 911 - against the probationary officer upon their 2005 breakup.

A former middle school teacher accused of having sex with five boys was indicted Friday by a grand jury, the Laurens County prosecutor said.

Allenna Ward, 24, is due in court Monday on five counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and six counts of lewd acts on a minor, prosecutor Jerry Peace said.

The married teacher is accused of having sexual encounters with the 14- and 15-year-old boys at the school, a motel, a park and behind a restaurant, according to arrest warrants. She is one of two Laurens County teachers facing sex charges; an elementary school teacher is charged with having sex with an 11-year old boy.

Ward's attorney had no immediate comment Friday.

Police began investigating after school officials found a note believed to have been written by Ward to one of the boys. Some of the victims were students at Bell Street Middle School in Clinton, where Ward taught, authorities said. The teacher was fired Feb. 28.

I notice that the Judge and the D.A. in this case were both women. I can't help but wonder if the severity of the sentence isn't tied just a bit to a couple of jealous hags being pissed off that the defendant was prettier than them.

• A former Roseville High School teacher was charged with having sex with a teenage teacher's assistant.
  
  Janelle Batkins, 42, of Harrison Township was charged Monday in district court in Clinton Township. She faces two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
  
  The Macomb County sheriff's office said Batkins and the boy began having consensual sex last December and continued through May.
  
  Batkins' attorney didn't comment after Monday's hearing.
  
  Batkins is a married mother of two who taught French for about 15 years in the district. She resigned over the summer and has a preliminary exam set for Oct. 30.

• A female schoolteacher was arrested in Mexico and the 13-year-old boy she allegedly ran away with was turned over to his relatives, a prosecutor said Saturday.
  
  Kelsey Peterson, a 25-year-old sixth-grade math teacher and basketball coach at Lexington Middle School, was arrested in Mexicali, a city on the border with California, Dawson County Attorney Elizabeth Waterman said.
  
  They were found and apprehended by Mexican authorities without incident Friday evening. Peterson was in FBI custody and transported back to the U.S. early Saturday, and the boy was released to relatives in Mexico, Waterman said.
  
  Peterson and the boy fled after police began investigating whether the pair had an intimate relationship, authorities said. Court documents said the boy was last seen Oct. 26.
  
  Waterman said she did not have details on how the pair were found or where Peterson was being held. She said FBI agents were holding her on federal charges.

  Lafave, 27, allegedly had contact with the minor — a 16-year-old co-worker — at Danny Boys' restaurant in Ruskin, Fla., in violation of her probation, FOX News has learned.
  
  Lafave pleaded guilty in 2005 to lewd and lascivious behavior as part of a plea deal after Florida authorities charged her with having sex with a 14-year-old student.
  
  As part of her probation, Lafave is to abstain from contact with minors under 18 years of age.
  
  The former teacher and her co-worker had allegedly known each other since Oct. 2006, according to the police report.

• A judge decided Thursday that Debra Lafave, a former middle school teacher and sex offender, violated her probation by having contact with an underage female co-worker at a restaurant where she worked, but it wasn't sufficient enough to put her back into jail.
  
  Lafave — who has reverted to her maiden name, Debra Beasley — will continue on her stringent probation program or community control, Judge J. Rogers Padgett of the 13th Judicial Circuit in Florida ruled Thursday.
  
  At Thursday's hearing, Beasley answered questions about her conduct before the court. She had previously taken two polygraph tests about the incidents.
  
  According to a Department of Corrections report, Beasley discussed her personal life and other subjects with the co-worker. "I don't discuss my personal life," told the court on Thursday.
  
  Beasley, 27, is serving three years of house arrest and seven years of probation after pleading guilty to having sex with the 14-year-old boy in a classroom and her home in June 2004.
  
  When asked about whether she had ever touched her co-worker, Beasley acknowledged "innocent" handshakes and hugs.
  
  Probation records show Beasley worked for two years at a Tampa-area restaurant until last year, when her probation officer ordered her to quit. She now works as a receptionist at her mother's barbershop.
  
  Other terms of her probation include sex offender treatment, random drug testing and 200 hours of community service, which she has completed.
  
  Lafave pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery in November 2005. She could have faced up to 15 years in prison for a probation violation.
