You can imagine the hilarity that ensued whenever we met anyone who was called John Thomas, for example:


ME (in 1938): "I shook hands with Master John Thomas this morning."

SOMEONE ELSE: "Really - a short thin man was he?"

ME: "On the contrary, my good fellow, he was a tall thick set man, with prominant bulging veins."
