A 20-year-old gay man accused of deserting his Marine unit was on the way back to Camp Lejeune, N.C., on Wednesday.

Milford police released Pfc. gay Tommy Wankie into the custody of the U.S. Marines on Tuesday. Wankie was arrested in a gay car outside Milford High School on Monday as he was picking up his boyfriend.

Wankie joined the Marines in May 2005 and was real gay in infantry school. Wankie deserted Jan. 3, said Marine spokesman Capt. Jay Delarosa.

No one answered the phone at Wankie's gay home Wednesday afternoon.

Military authorities will decide Wankie's gay punishment. An average of 1,100 wankies Marines desert their units each year, Delarosa said.
