Snagged this interesting article from http://www.3strandwrestling.com Quote:
Dead Wrestlers by Rick Clark To Submit Feedback On This Article Please Click Here
I've had several people request that I write an article on this subject for a variety of reasons: Everything from morbid curiosity to settling a bet to just being informative. Well, today I was once again approached to write such an article. Today I accepted. Now, before I start, I wish to explain that the information given in this article was gleaned from three sources: One, The Encyclopedia of Pro Wrestling (for more information check www.PWBOOK.com); two, Scott Teal at www.1wrestlinglegends.com; and three, www.wrestlingmuseum.com.
It has been said by many that this is the worst year ever for wrestlers to die. Well, there have been far worse in recent history. This year, so far, thirty-four wrestlers and former wrestlers have passed away. It was thirty-three, but Danny Fargo passed away from cancer last Friday at the age of 44. Of those, four wrestlers and one valet were still active in the business. Of those five people, only one person died as the direct result of a wrestling match and that was Larry Booker aka Moondog Spot, who collapsed in the ring during a match and passed away from a heart attack. This year the ages of the wrestlers at the time of their death ranged from 32 for Crash Holly to 92 for Jackie Nichols. The causes varied as well. Five people died of cancer. Eleven people died from heart attacks or heart disease. One person passed away from Alzheimer's. Two more died of kidney failure. A person died from lung failure. One wrestler died from acute cocaine poisoning. Another passed away from pneumonia. Several were listed with natural causes or no specific cause of death.
While this is a hefty sum of people, let's look at some recent years for comparison, shall we? In 2002 forty-four wrestlers and former wrestlers passed away. Of those only a few were still active. The youngest list was Davy Boy Smith at 39 (Haiti Kid's age was not listed and may have been younger), and the oldest was Speedy Hatfield, the father of the Field Brothers at 93.
In 2001, forty wrestlers and former wrestlers passed away. Of these wrestlers, seven were still active. The youngest was Russ Haas, the brother of Charlie Haas, who currently works for the WWE. Russ was only 27 years old when he passed away. Cookie Cummings was only 34 when she was killed in a motorcycle accident. Terry Gordy was only 40 and died of a heart attack. Sombra Negra was only 30 years old when he passed away. Chris Adams was shot to death by his best friend and died at the age of 46.
In the year 2000, 38 wrestlers and former wrestlers passed away. Gary Albright and Tony Nash both died in the ring that year. Gary had a heart attack and actually won the match after he was dead, much to the skill of his opponent that evening. Tony Nash was dropped on his head by an inexperienced wrestler in only his second match. Both of these men were in their 30s when they died. Yokozuna had a heart attack at 34 and passed away that year. Chris Duffy was only 36 when he died of a seizure. The Harlem Warlord was only 32 and died during surgery. This was the year that we also lost Jumbo Tsuruta, Gordon Solie, Al Costello, Bobby Duncum Jr., The Assassin Tom Renesto, George Kopecky, Rick Davidson, Tony Parisi, Yoshi Momota, Otto Lugger, The Blue Demon and Eddie Sullivan along with several others.
In the year 1999, we lost 34 wrestlers and former wrestlers. We lost Owen Hart to an in-ring accidental fall. We lost Rick Rude to a heart attack at the age of 41. Rick had just beaten testicular cancer and was training to get back into the ring at the time of his death. We lost Emiko Kado, who was a mere 23 years old to an in-ring brain injury. The Renegade took his own life that year. And we lost Joe LeDuc, Giant Baba, Joe Christy, Herb Welch, Kurt von Hess, Gerri Monte, The Mighty Atlas, Gorilla Monsoon, Mark Curtis, Hiro Matsuda. 28 year-old Yuel Lovett passed away from cardiac arrest.
The point I'm trying to make is that every year we lose some wrestlers that have become part of our lives. Every time a wrestler passes away, it makes many of us feel that much more mortal. Since 1895, literally thousands of wrestlers and former wrestlers have passed away. We don't know all of their names or ages or places of death or the details behind each and every one of them. These will be listed using the most popular pseudonym, so that we don't have five or six listings for the same person. However, I will give a list of wrestlers that we know have passed on:

That's scary.
Makes you realize just how dangerous the sport is, both in and out of the ring. I wonder how many of those deaths were steroid/drug related. Not a terribly healthy lifestyle, by any stretch of the imagination.

See thats the one thing this guy seems to have overlooked, how many of these guys who died from heart attacks etc, were brought on from drugs & specifically steroids? Surely that would make the deaths at least connected to their wrestling career!

I agree. I, too, found it odd that he didn't at least briefly mention the possibility of drugs being a factor. How else can you explain the horrendous number of heart/kidney/liver related deaths in a group of people whos' only connection was wrestling?
I think it's something that shouldn't be ignored, especially considering how many kids look up and aspire to be like these people.

Oh, please! Guys, while I'd wager more than afew of the folks on this list died as the result of complications stemming from long-term substance abuse, I'm sure the percentage would be comparable with lists of other fields, like dead football players, baseball players, etc.

Sorry to hear Moondog Spot passed away.
I met him years ago at a Party. He was a real character!

Actually I'd say it was a higher percentage in wrestling due to the punishment they put their bodies thru. I would assume their is a higher ammount of pain killers used which is not good for the body in the long run, plus physique is more important in wrestling so you would assume steroids are more regulary used, especially as Vince changed it from being a sport to being sports entertainment to get round that issue!
And the point is not whether other sports are the same, the point is this guy is trying to say that deaths in wrestling are not as connected to wrestling as we would believe,he seems to overlook the fact that things these guys did when they were wrestling could have an effect on them later in life!

Dave Meltzer reports this afternoon that Jack Tunney, the former figurehead President of the WWF and real-life Toronto wrestling promoter from 1983-1984 until selling out to the WWF, died on Saturday at age 68.
There will be a funeral tomorrow at the Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church on 354 St. Clair Avenue West at 10:00 am.
Although a storyline "President", Tunney was legitimately the president of Titan Sports Canada beginning in 1989, during the erea WWF operated under the Titan Sports name.

We could probably start one of those "death pools" using only people involved with wrestling.
And that's terrible.

apparently Owen Hart is a taboo subject for jokes amongst wrestlers, backstage at the last show i worked the boys were talking about their favorite angles in wrestling and i mentioned i loved how real the Owen fall angle was, and i cant wait for his return. the room grew silent and i got the cold shoulder the rest of the night! its as if i brought my message board persona to the real world!

To be honest its all about the hypocrisy that comes with certain deaths! Owen was well liked by his peers, but he became more well liked after his death! Its like an artists work only becomes valuable after his death!
Lets face it,from what I hear Dale Earnhardt was nowhere near as much of a hero in life as he was in death!
