Was the guy who played Paris in Voyager also the one who played the ambitious cadet, who got Wesley Crusher into a conspiracy to cover up an illegal shuttle manuever, which had killed another student?

Interesting to see Worf's (human) brother.

Did I mention "The Pegasus"? That was a good one, though I think the Federation should've developed a cloaking device. IRL, the Soviet Union didn't honor agreements about not testing new atom bombs (which made Robert A. Heinlein write his controversial classic "Starship Troopers").

yes. in fact they originally were going to recycle that character into Voyager, but they ultimately decided that because he never expressed remorse he wasn't redeemable.
So they wrote Tom Paris to basically be a clone of him and looked for a similar actor. When they didn't find anyone they liked as well as Robert Duncan Mcneil, they just hired him to play Paris.

I knew that, too. It is cool that they hired the same guy to play Tom Paris. I like the character.

The character in " The First Duty " ( Next Gen episode where the actor first appeared. ) was indeed quite irresponsible.

Tom Paris was reliable, and did help save the day several times in Voyager episodes.

Thanks r3x29yz4a!

I thought "irredeemable" wasn't in the Star Trek vocubulary. He could've changed his mind after all those years of force labor and therapy sessions. I think I'm going to think that the guy changed his name while being in the penal/rehab colony.

i would've thought so too, and it would have been a nice nod to TNG. I think another major obstacle is that Tom Paris technically had graduated and been given a commission by the point of his disgrace and joining the maquis (and subsequent arrest), whereas Locarno had been expelled for covering up the death of a fellow cadet. So Janeway would have to overlook his actions AND grant him a field commission.
This puts the writers in the place of either having to explain all of that or not explaining it and having fans bitch about the lack of continuity.
Easier to create Tom Paris in a similar mold and then craft a background more tailored to what the show required.

I wonder what would have happened to Lacarno had he told the truth right from the start after his fellow cadet had died during the failed colvert starburst maneuver?

Attempting the fobidden maneuver itself at all was bad enough; could he have salvaged his startfleet career by telling the truth right from the start? What do you think, r3x? Captain Sweden? Anybody?

the episode wouldn't have been nearly as interesting.

I actually think it was like Watergate where the coverup was what killed him. Picard's whole speech to Wesley wasn't about never making mistakes, it was about honesty. And the fact that he lied was the real disgrace to Starfleet that they wouldn't stand.
From what I've seen in that episode plus others I imagine he (like Wesley) would have had his credits for the year voided and would need to repeat his year as a shamed student. There would also have been a major blackmark on his record that would have his assignments be rather shitty and minor (patrol on science vessels) for years until he could work his way to re-earning Starfleet's full trust and respect.
I think the sad thing is he probably would've been given a chance at a second start if he had just shown the honor that Wesley did. Remember, Sito Jaxa (the Bajoran cadet) was posted to the Enterprise specifically because Picard believed in second chances.
That's just my theory on it anyway.

Thank you, r3x... what you suggested is pretty much what I feel might have occured, had Lacarno been honest immediately after the accident.

It's sad that, in this show, as well as in reality, people attempt the cover up thing, which does not always work.

It is human nature....People get so full of themselves, and stray from what is right, and take the easier (By comparision ) choice.

There are some people who speculate that the creation of the new-but-very-similar character of Tom Paris was because they'd have to pay the writers who created Lacarno each time he appeared in an episode.

this is the original Janeway. She quit after the first day of shooting saying the TV schedule of shooting was too much. Its a good thing too. She was flat, unattractive, and boring.

And I watched and taped the two parter called " Caretaker", which tells you exactly how and why Voyager came to be in the Delta Quadrant. It was okay, no great shakes. Glad I have it now, though.

Before that were two Next Gen episodes :

The one where the old guy makes himself young again.

DUMB.

After that, " When The Bough Breaks."

It was okay.

Before that, DS9... it was during the Cardasian occupation of the station. VERY good epsiode!

I actually rewatched Caretaker myself this morning. I can enjoy Voyager a bit better now because I know exactly what to expect and don't expect it to be anything more than it was. I liked the Seska/traitor storyline and the Maquis tensions of the first two years.

Caretaker is a good one, but I was writing a story to post here and I guess I just didn't give it the time I could have! I will re-watch it as soon as the tape is full.

Can't wait for "Basics" to come up... that is one of my fave two part Voyager episodes!

I bought 20 blank tapes to get all the ones I really like, which is about 8 out of every 10 episodes!

Have seen "Thine Own Self", "Masks", "Eye of the Beholder" and "Genesis".

If I'd rate them I'd have them in this order, best to worse (though none were bad):

"Thine Own Self", "Genesis", "Masks", and "Eye of the Beholder".

Yeah, that is about the order I would rank those episodes, Captain Sweden.

BTW," Thine Own Self '' is one of my favorite Data episodes, right up there with " The Offspring ", " Measure Of A Man ", and " Hero Worship. "

And the one where Data meets his " mother. "

Okay, I watched DS9 today, I do not know the name of the one I saw, but it was the conclusion of the Cardassian
- Dominion War.. and it was an excellent episode!

After that : Next Generation - " Home Soil."

Ecch!

" Coming of Age "... Pretty good one, and we see Remick again... under less friendly circumstances.

Voyager :

" Parallax " Ship stuck in a singularity. Good early episode.

" Time and Again " - Tom Paris and Capt. Janeway stuck a day in the past, and a mystery they must solve.. their fate and the planet they are on is in the balance.

Good one!

Okay, I slept late today, and on Cinemax was a movie, Police Academy 5 : Miami Beach.

What does this have to do with Star Trek?

A lot!

The villain in the movie was played by Rene Auberjonois, who played " Odo" on DS9.

One of the cops was played by Matt McCoy, who played Devinoni Ral in the third season Next Generation episode called " The Price ", which aired on 11/13/1989.
He was the negotiator whom Counselor Troi had fallen in love with.

This Police Academy movie was released in 1988, which was during the first year of Next Generation.

Didn't know that, thanks!

Maybe Locarno/Paris had worked for Starfleet Intelligence (who seems to take delight in cover-ups) who created a fake ID for him, with equally fake background?

I don't remember "Measure Of A Man", but otherwise I like all the episodes you mentioned.

Today I saw "Journey's End" and "First Born". I like the 2nd one better... Worf ep:s are more in my taste than Wesley ep:s, especially after the cover-up at the academy. But I guess the writers did what they could to make Wesley interesting as well believable, after making him a fan-hated miracle worker during Season 1. I remember both ep:s, but from the 1st one I only remembered the Native North Americans. (It was years since I 1st saw ST:TNG, and not only did I miss the 1st 2-3 seasons, I mixed up ST with Babylon 5 which aired right before ST!")

BTW, I hope the channel that airs TNG now will air DS9; that show never got a proper chance here.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I think the Khan and Gene War episodes from TOS were inspired from events and characters indirectly told in Robert A Heinlein's Utopian novel "Beyond This Horizon", which is about the wonders of applied genetics/eugenics and Social Credit. In the novel, dictators from the past "Second Genetic War" (briefly mentioned as part of the World's history) are called "The Great Khans". Those Khans used, unlike the good side in the war, genetics in order to create supersoldiers, as well specific workers for different tasks (similar to Aldous Huxley's "A Brave New World").

The TNG episode "Conspiracy" must have, at least indirectly, been inspired by Heinlein's "The Puppet Masters", the invasion story about alien slugs taking over people's bodies.

"Conan, what's the meaning of life?"
"To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women!"
-Conan the Barbarian

"Well, yeah."

This is very likely!

I read that book, too, it's one of my fave Heinlein reads.. and yes, it does sound like this book inspired the episode, which is on very soon! " Conspiracy" is one of my favorite first season Next Gen episodes.

Today :

DS9 - Dax and Worf got married! VERY good show!

Next Gen : " Heart Of Glory " - FIRST real Worf episode;
it was very good, and they'd improve starting next season, as Worf's character develops in the 2 nd season, as did the rest of the bridge crew.

" Arsenal Of Freedom " - Pretty good one, the late Vincent Schiavelli guest stars in this as a weapons salesman.

Voyager : I didn't tape either of today's episodes, but they were good.. the one was where aliens steal Neelix's lungs, and then, Voyager has to help a nebula sized living organism.

Just finished Tuvix. A good episode. I like when the end is morally questionable and difficult.

This is one of my fave Voyager episodes, r3x! I look forward to taping it.

Today : The episode on DS 9 where an alternate world guy comes into Kira's life. It was a good one.

Next Generation:

" Symbiosis " - A so so message about the dangers of drug abuse. " The Game " , a fifth season epsiode, got that message across much better, IMO.

" Skin Of Evil " - One of the BEST first season episodes.
Tasha dies. The scene with the memorial service at the end is very moving.

Voyager - First one was where Voyager finds a wormhole and they make contact with a man in the Alpa quadrant. This one is quite good.

Second one : Tom Paris is punished for a murder he did not commit by having to relive the man he supposedly murder's last minutes of life. Pretty good episode.

Yeah, I recorded 'em both.

one of my least favorite DS9 episodes. I liked the other mirror universe episodes much better.

is that the episode with the guy who played Kirk's son in the movies? Not a fan of that episode, the Game is great though.

the giant tar monster was actually pretty creepy at the time, but now looks a bit silly.

the one with the Romulan captain? I did like that one. Clever idea of the micro-wormhole.
