...technically.

Boston College/Central Michigan starts on ESPN2 at 6 eastern, and South Carolina/Mississippi St starts on ESPN at 8. Then, Nevada/Fresno St at 8 on ESPN tomorrow, and then the big games on Saturday.

Ohio State is currently ranked #1, which means I expect(and demand, for sake of discussion) the many Ohioans here to tout the Buckeyes. I, myself, shall be doing no such thing for the Longhorns, as I am still floating on happy-thoughts from last year's game. I'm content with a winning season and a small bowl invite.

Make your picks, boast about your teams/players, trash talk, tailgate, chant, whatever.

My prediction is that Teddy Ginn, Jr. will once again get a lot of Heisman hype, and will once again not win the Heisman.

The obvious choices for Heisman are the Adrian Petersons, Brady Quinns and Dwayne Jarretts of the world. While I think it's likely to be one of those three, I'll go not-quite-so-obvious, and guess Michael Bush of Louisville.

I'll tout the Buckeyes.

No on Ginn for the Heisman, though. I think QB Troy Smith will finish higher for that award.

Schedule
Northern Illinois this Saturday
at Texas
Cincinnati
Penn State
at Iowa
Bowling Green
at Michigan State
Indiana
Minnesota
at Illinois
at Northwestern
Michigan

Toughest games are at Texas and at Iowa, though I think the Buckeyes win both and run the table, topping it off with a demolition of Michigan at the Horseshoe, after which Lloyd Carr will be fired with a 1-5 record against Tressel's Buckeyes.

As for the Heisman, I say handsome, brown-eyed Irish QB Brady Quinn wins it and gets to look forward to being the #1 pick next year.

On paper, it does look like the national championship is Ohio State's to lose. I do wonder how their defense will stack up this year, though, given all the key players they lost(six defensive players taken in the first four rounds of the '06 draft).

I think Michigan State may be a surprise challenge for him, with their high-powered offense.

Hm, Ted Ginn might want to make a liar out of me.

Ohio State 14 Northern Illinois 0 in the first quarter. Both Bucks' TDs are Ginn receptions, the second for 58 yards.

He had a 42 yard TD catch in last year's opener. Then he did nothing the next four games. His problem is consistency.

Garrett Wolfe pretty much had his way with the Ohio State defense. That'll need to be addressed if they're going to stop UT's powerhouse rushing attack next week, led by Big 12 freshman of the year and track star Jamaal Charles.

Well...

Michael Bush broke his leg, and is out for the season. He did have a 128 yards and three touchdowns before that, though!

Ohio State, Texas, USC...all rolled.

ND had to struggle to get out of Atlanta with a win. When there's a polling system in place, there is such a thing as a bad win. ND had one of those.

Surprising, they were the trendy pick in all the preseason talk. Tyrone Willingham has to be smiling over this.

It's not exactly a disaster. They still won. Frankly, you could make the argument that this was best for them in the long run. They got a big fat dose of reality after every writer in the nation was singing their praises this summer, and they showed that their weakest point last year(defense) has improved, by stymieing a pretty good offense.

See, I feel for Ty. He got dumped by his school just because Urban Meyer was available. Serves Notre Dame right he said no to them. But that's all Ty's kids playing for the highly ranked Irish while he's stuck with a bad Washington team.

Oh, I have no sympathy for Notre Dame. I disliked them well before they fired Willingham(which was indescribably shameful on their part). They can lose every game for all I care.

I just liked how Weiss talked up the big deal of winning Super Bowls before Ohio State went out and thumped the shit outta the Domers last January.

Tressel has 5 national titles as a head coach. Weiss ain't got none nowhere. And damn, the guy gets fatter by the day.

I don't.

Tressel won them as HEAD coach. And let's not overlook his Div. I-A title with OSU in 2002.

Weis won his rings as an assistant coach.

When Charlie's got ANY ring as a head coach, then we can talk. Otherwise, getouttahere.

Not necessarily. She's married to A. J. Hawk, LB with Green Bay.

If the Pack suck like I think they can this year, they may end up with the #1 pick and could draft Brady. If so, we'll see more of Laura Quinn Hawk.

...yeah, against powerhouses like McNeese State! Weiss coached a state championship high school team. There's his head coach ring!

Seriously, though, Charlie Weiss has succeeded at the highest level of football, on the biggest stage in American sports. And he turned Notre Dame arround immediately. I think his coaching resume is better at this point. I think recruits will think so, too.

Jimmy Clausen, the top high school recruit for next year(and one of the most heralded quarterbacks in a while, due to his family's QB pedigree and the fact that he was first scouted at 13), has verbally committed to Notre Dame, and Charlie Weiss is why. Succeeding at the college level is great, but at the end of the day, the NFL is the ultimate.

Really? What's Weis' record head to head against Tressel? Yeah. Thanks for playing. Charlie succeeded in the NFL as somebody's assistant.

And you think recruits didn't see last night's OSU win over Texas?

Speaking of that little game last night...

Where is the big Texas supporter who was wagging his fucking finger in my face last year on the RKMBs? Huh?? Where the fuck is this loser now? Oh, he was good to say in the offeason, "Oh yeah, the Bucks will not prevail in Austin."

Dude, please, stop this.

Tout Charlie as the next Rockne AFTER he's won a few, OK?

And Charlie aint' gonna be here to win many more if he doesn't shed a few pounds. He nearly died from stomach stapling years ago (he bitched that being fat is what kept him from getting an NFL job years ago).

You on Charlie's payroll, Animalman?

Following this...unusual logic, what's Tressel's record against Barry Alvarez? If not for a 5 point victory in '02(one of a half a dozen narrow victories that year), he'd be bageled, if you'll allow the tennis terminology.

Tressel is a fine coach(so is Barry, actually), and if you wish to say that he's the better gameplanner, the better motivator, etc, I wouldn't necessarily disagree with you. He made some great adjustments in last night's game, especially in taking advantage of the absence of Tarell Brown(for which Anthony Gonzalez can be thankful) in the Texas secondary.

Still, if you went around and asked every college coach in America whose list of accomplishments they'd rather have, I bet the significant majority would take Charlie's. He was a vital part of the coaching staff that won three Super Bowls. The Super Bowl is what every kid who ever picked up a football plays for. Even college football, really, is just a glorified stepping stone towards that goal.

Your dirty talk is a bit on the mean side, Jimbo. Tim is unlikely to accept your proposal that way.

11's a few!

I'm not exactly comparing the guy to Bear Bryant. You just seem to take any accomplishment any other coach has and poo-poo on it with the patented Jim Tressel argument.

"Steve Spurrier won a game? Well, Jim Tressel has won a lot!"

"Mack Brown won a national championship? Jim Tressel did that his first year!"

"Joe Paterno cured cancer? Who cares? Jim Tressel beat Michigan!"

Of course, this makes you accusing me of being on somebody's payroll all the more hilarious.

Now, don't get me wrong, if Ohio State wins it all this year(and they very well might), I wouldn't begrude you the opportunity to praise your team and your boy. That being said, give Tressel's leg a little rest for now, eh? You've been attched to it since that bogus pass interference call four years ago. That's the only reason I even defended Charlie this one, solitary time.

I think Jim's a very good coach. I think Weis can be a very good coach, too.

I'm not the one who started this need to compare the two right now. But if you're going to sing Charlie's praises and tell me the NFL's the ultimate, I'm going to bring you back down to earth. And forget Alvarez, we're talking Tressel and Weis, and right now, head to head, Jim's 1-0. And Jim's been the head coach of national champions. Charlie's been an assistant on Super Bowl winners.

And regarding the "bogus" interference call...go cry in a yellow hanky.

Yes, 1-0. An insurmountable difference of one game. Tressel, with the powerhouse team he built, vs. Weiss, with the laughing stock he inherited.

I didn't know you went to the rex school of argumentation.

I'm not a Notre Dame fan. Infact, I believe I mentioned in this very thread that I dislike them. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of Weiss, either. I respect what he's done with the Irish so far, but I don't think he's the best coach in college football or anything.

Now, if you're saying I'm whiney for pointing out the flaw in your argument, then I guess I'll have to accept that label. Either way, one game does not prove Tressel has the better overall coaching record, especially when you consider the circumstances under which that one game was played. If it did, then you would have to concede that Barry Alvarez trumps them both, and I'm betting you're not willing to do that.

The flaw in your argument is that you see Weis' role as an ASSITANT coach in the NFL as superior to Tress' record as HEAD COACH in college.

Why don't you call Charlie and ask him which is better--to be an assistant coach on a Super Bowl champion or a head coach in Div. 1-A college? Nah. You don't need to call and ask him--Chuck's behavior answers the question for you: HE thinks it's better to be the head coach in college than an assistant in the NFL because he *chose* to leave his assistant's job in the NFL and become a head coach in college.

Whether you're a fan of Weis is irrelevant considering that you still wish to pursue this argument.

Regarding who's the better coach? The jury's still out on Weis (which I believe I have already pointed out when I say "let's see him win a few"). But as far as evaluating Weis and Tress, the best measure of that is their record against each other AND as coaches who have been on championship teams, and right now, it's 1-0 in favor of Tress.

If you absurdly want to bring Alvarez into this, please be sure you let me know how many national championships he's won. I'd make the same argument if you brought Lloyd Carr into this. Carr and Tress both have national championships (though Tress didn't have to share his with anybody), so ok, we go to their head-to-head record, and it's Tress 4, Carr 1.

Hey, let's go ahead and bring Joe Pa into this too. Historically speaking, Joe's the better coach than Tress. Joe's got 2 national titles, so that kind of ends the discussion.

I'm not hanging on to Tress blindly. I think he's a very good coach. Maybe in January Weis will have a chance to even up his record against Tress.

I don't believe I said that. I never compared the roles. What I actually said was that his accomplishments in that role are superior. Afterall, it's not like we're talking about Dennis Erickson or Chan Gailey.

Quote:

I can only speculate as to his precise motives, but I suspect the fact that he is a Notre Dame graduate played a significant role in his decision. If, for example, he had been offered the Florida job, which was open at the time, I don't think he would have accepted it.

Quote:

You employed the classic "I've got nothing left to say so I'll use this crying graemlin" technique, but since I have nothing invested emotionally in the success of Weiss or Notre Dame, I'd hardly be crying about it, either way. I like discussing sports, and I like to see any good discussion on the subject finished, because there are so few here these days.

Quote:

But as far as evaluating Weis and Tress, the best measure of that is their record against each other

I disagree, a point I tried to illustrate by bringing up Alvarez.

Quote:

AND as coaches who have been on championship teams

Kind of hard to compare those stats, given Weiss has been in college football a year.

This was fun. Go Bucks.

The crying thing was employed when you mentioned about Tressel's powerhouse Bucks beating up on Weis' ragtag ND team in the Fiesta Bowl.
