A look at victims shot in attack on Rep. Giffords
Judge praised; 9-year-old girl born on 9/11 active in student government
Below:
U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz. U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was believed to be the main target when a gunmen went on a shooting spree that left six dead and at least 13 injured Saturday. Here is a look at some of the victims as they become identified.

Giffords, 40, was first elected to the Arizona House in 2000 and the state Senate in 2002.

She married Cmdr. Mark E. Kelly, a NASA astronaut and Navy pilot from New Jersey, in 2007.

Federal District Judge John M. Roll U.S. District Judge John M. Roll
Named Arizona's chief federal judge in 2006, Roll won wide acclaim for a career as a respected jurist and as a leader who had pushed to beef up the court's strained bench to handle a growing number of border crime-related cases.

"I have never met a more sincere ... fair-minded, brilliant federal judge or any judge for that matter in my whole life," Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said.

Roll, 63, was heading home after a trip to church and the store before stopping to visit briefly with Giffords at an event she was holding for constituents at a northwest-side Tucson Safeway.

A look at victims in attack on Giffords

Roll was a Pennsylvania native who got his law degree from the University of Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Maureen, three sons, and five grandchildren.

Roll was appointed to the federal bench in 1991 by President George H.W. Bush. Roll previously served as a state trial judge and as a judge on the midlevel Arizona Court of appeals. He previously worked as a county and state prosecutor.

"Judge Roll was a widely respected jurist, a strong and able leader of his court, and a kind, courteous and sincere gentleman," said Chief Judge Alex Kozinski of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the federal circuit that includes Arizona. "He worked tirelessly to improve the delivery of justice to the people of Arizona."

Roll, a Pennsylvania native, received death threats in 2009 over a $32 million civil-rights suit filed against an Arizona rancher by illegal immigrants.

At the time, Roll and U.S. Marshal's officials attributed the threats to hysteria from talk radio.

Christina Taylor Greene
The 9-year-old who was shot at the event and later died at a hospital went to the Giffords event with a neighbor because she had just been elected to the student council and was interested in government, her uncle told KTAR in Phoenix.

Born Sept. 11, 2001, according to NBC station KVOA, she attended Mesa Verde Elementary School.

Christina was also involved in ballet, baseball and her church.

She just received her first Holy Communion at St. Odelia’s Catholic Church on Tucson’s northwest wide, Catholic Diocese of Tucson officials said.

Gabe Zimmerman, communications outreach director for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz. Gabe Zimmerman
Giffords' 30-year-old communications outreach director was engaged to be married, the Arizona Republic reported. He had worked for Giffords in her Tucson district since 2007.

“We serve who walks into our office and we don’t even ask what party they belong to,” Zimmerman told the Tucson Citizen in 2007.

The 76-year-old retiree was described as a jack of all trades by Mike Nowak, the couple’s minister at Mountain Ave. Church of Christ, told the Arizona Daily Star. Stoddard's wife, Mavanell, was shot in the leg but is expected to recover, the Star reported.

Stoddard, who performed maintenance work at the church, and his wife spent summers traveling, friends told the Star. The couple visited all 50 states and 28 foreign countries, they said.

Other victims
Police said Dorthy Murray, 76, and Phyllis Scheck, 79, were also killed in the shooting.

Also injured but expected to be all right, said C.J. Karamargin, Giffords' communications director, are staffer Pam Simon and deputy director Ron Barber.

TUCSON, Ariz. — A gunman opened fire as a congresswoman met with constituents outside a grocery store, killing Arizona's chief federal judge and five others and leaving the lawmaker fighting for her life in an attempted assassination that had Americans questioning whether divisive politics had driven the attack.

The shooting targeted Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, authorities said, and left the three-term congresswoman in critical condition after a bullet passed through her head. A shaken President Barack Obama called the attack "a tragedy for our entire country."

Giffords, 40, a moderate Democrat, narrowly won re-election in November against a Tea Party candidate who opposed her support of the health care law. Anger over her position became violent at times, with her Tucson office vandalized a few hours after the House passed the overhaul last March. More recently, at a Giffords event someone dropped a weapon out of their pants.

His motivation was not immediately known, but Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik described him as mentally unstable and possibly acting with an accomplice. He said in addition to the six deaths, 13 people were wounded in the melee. Dupnik said the rampage ended only after two people tackled the gunman.

Investigators said they were looking for an accomplice, believed to be in his 50s, who may have assisted in the attack.

Dupnik said authorities have pictures indicating the existence of a second person aiding in the attack.

A 9mm Glock handgun that had what police described as "an extended clip" with 30 bullets was recovered at the scene, The Washington Post reported. Officials told The Associated Press the gun used in the attack was purchased legally. The Post said it was bought Nov. 30 from the Sportsman's Warehouse in Tucson.

The shooter had another magazine that held about 30 bullets and two that held about 15 bullets each, sources told the Post, and he also had a knife.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was listed in critical condition Saturday evening. The sheriff pointed to the vitriolic political rhetoric that has consumed the country as he denounced the shooting.

"When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous," the sheriff said. "And unfortunately, Arizona I think has become the capital. We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."

'Targets'
Giffords expressed similar concern before the shooting. In an interview after her office was vandalized, she referred to the animosity against her by conservatives, including Sarah Palin's decision to list Giffords' seat as one of the top "targets" in the midterm elections.

"For example, we're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is, that the way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that, they have to realize that there are consequences to that action," Giffords said in an interview with MSNBC.

During his campaign effort to unseat Giffords in November, Republican challenger Jesse Kelly held fundraisers where he urged supporters to help remove Giffords from office by joining him to shoot a fully loaded M-16 rifle. Kelly is a former Marine who served in Iraq and was pictured on his website in military gear holding his automatic weapon and promoting the event.

A perfect example of the liberal spin of this and other similar shootings in recent months, where the media slanders Republicans and blames conservative "anger", "vitriol", "bigotry", "animosity" (i.e., PEACEFUL PROTEST AND POLITICAL DISSENT) as somehow to blame for the shooting, despite what BASAMS/Irwin Schwab posted above of people who knew the shooter to be "left-wing, quite liberal".

How is "right wing hate" responsible for a left-wing shooting spree ?!?

Only by the logic of liberal media slander.

  • from Do Racists have lower IQ's...

EXACTLY what they accuse Republicans/conservatives of doing, is EXACTLY what liberals/Democrats do themselves, to those who oppose their beliefs.

Is it going to be the 60's all over again?

And don't forget the Al Gore fan who held the employees hostage at the Discovery Channel.

Funny how the center left press didn't delve into the alleged politics of those gunmen.

I think it's the Obama effect. These left wing loons really bought into his messiah act. And now that he has been in office two years and proven himself to be Jimmy Carter II they don't know what to believe anymore and they are all cracking.

Bsams was using a tweet from somebody who claimed to know the shooter. That's hardly been verified. Looking at the tantrum/shitfit conservatives are throwing I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't turn out to be anything. Now he's being linked to a group from the far right.

wait you said the guy was anti-semitic, not me. You backed my left wing facts.

Rev. Wright Obama's mentor. He is widely documented as anti-Semitic. Right wing?

Helen Thomas, Obama's friend. She is proudly anti-Zionist. Right Wing?

Remember Jesse Jackson and Hymie-Town. Is Jesse right wing?

I didn't drag Obama into this, you did. If you want to use anti-Semitism as a motive, who went to a Church for decades that preached it? you can't erase that from history because it is inconvenient to you can you?

given the reaction of the partisan left so far, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see the administration attempt to use the thing to advance their objectives.

Look for new regulations to censor talk radio and police the internet, attempts to circumvent the second amendment and even pleas to stop repeal of Obamacare because it "dishonors" Giffords.

Actually what you'll see is the crosshairs and some of the fiery "reload" rhetoric will go away voluntarally. It was stupid on Palin's part and it's now a liability for her now that somebody on her list was shot in the head.

DHS Memo Suggests Shooter May Be Linked To Racist Organization
by Jennifer Griffin | January 09, 2011

According to a memo obtained by Fox News with information compiled by the Department of Homeland Security and released to state law enforcement officials, Jared Loughner, the alleged shooter of Congressman Gabrielle Giffords, may have been influenced by a pro-white racist organization that publishes an anti-immigration newsletter.

No direct connection, but strong suspicion is being direceted at American Renaissance, an organization that Loughner mentioned in some of his internet postings and federal law enforcement officials are investigating Loughner's possible links to the organization. The organization is a monthly publication that promotes a variety of white racial positions.

"The group's ideology is anti government, anti immigration, anti ZOG (Zionist Occupational Government), anti Semitic," according to the memo which goes on to point out that Congressman Giffords is the first Jewish female elected to high office in Arizona. A recent posting on American Renaissance's website on January 7 begins with an article entitled: "Exit poll: Whites are Different." The site goes on to list anti-immigration articles. Investigators are also pursuing Loughner's alleged anti-Semitism.

FOX

This is the first that I've seen that says this is a group the shooter talked about.

It sick. Remember that thread where MEM was almost praying that someone on Palin's list would get shot?

Looks like he finally got his wish.

Maybe he (the suspect) listened to too many Diddy and R. Kelly songs.

There is no version of this where you come out on top. Maybe your army comes, and maybe it’s too much for us, but it’s all on you. Because if we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damn well sure we’ll avenge it.

Quite frankly, I find anyone trying to label this guy as right wing or left wing as being an asshole. The guy was plain fucking nuts. His ideology was all over the place and inconsistent. He was simply a crazy, homicidal bastard.

It tends to put you immediately at a disadvantage and IMO is a sign of true weakness.

It's really sad that people lost there lives and MSNBC has dedicated the day to trying to censor the right.

He's certainly crazy but doesn't that go hand in hand with somebody from the political fringe who is willing to attempt to assinate an elected official? I do agree though that it's too early to say he's a right wing nut job but if more stuff comes out with the anti-immigration group that might change.

Jared Lee Loughner, the man believed responsible for the shooting of Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the murder of at least five others Saturday, left his MySpace friends a “goodbye” before his page was apparently taken down.

His YouTube page, in which he lists both The Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf among his favorite books, is still operational.

Definitely a liberal. Van Jones would be proud of his reading list.

Because all liberals read "Mein Kampf".
