 Quote:
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — In a case that rocked a city already torn by the horrors of Hurricane Katrina, four police officers accused of gunning down two unarmed people in the storm's chaotic aftermath could face death themselves.

The officers who could face the death penalty were charged along with two others in a 27-count indictment unsealed Tuesday. Five former New Orleans police officers already have pleaded guilty to helping cover up the shootings on the Danziger Bridge that left two men dead and four wounded just days after the August 2005 hurricane. In one instance, a mentally disabled man was shot in the back and stomped before he died.

Prosecutors say officers fabricated witness statements, falsified reports and planted a gun in an attempt to make it appear the shootings were justified. It was a shocking example of the violence and confusion that followed the storm.

With 80 percent of New Orleans underwater, officers from a department with a history of corruption were forced to battle rampant crime, and some became criminals themselves. Dozens of officers were fired or suspended for abandoning their post. In an separate case, an officer is charged with shooting a man whose body turned up in a burned out car.

The latest indictments also have come shortly after the city's new mayor replaced its former police chief and invited a Justice Department team to overhaul the city's corruption-plagued police department, which alreadyis the target of several federal investigations separate from the bridge shooting.

In the bridge shooting case, seven officers were charged with murder or attempted murder in December 2006 but a state judge threw out all the charges in August 2008. Federal authorities then stepped in a month later to launch their own investigation.

Don't you men 'Army' or 'National Guard'?

This was touted at the time as a manifestation of "white racism" against blacks. But two of the 4 cops who fired on blacks... are black!

I saw photos of them on Brett Baer's news report tonight. Despite that photos clearly show it to be at least partially black-on-black crime, the media was perfectly happy to portray it as racial incident, by omission of the fact two officers were black.
No doubt it was handled differently by the media due to W. Bush being president, than it ever would with any Democrat as president.

A police officer friend of mine told me back in the late 1980s that New Orleans police officers were at that time paid 16,000 a year.
16,000 !
No much money to risk your life. And probably not as well-trained as in better-funded police departments. I can easily see this occurring because of overwork, sleep-deprivation from the overtime they were working, and perhaps even panic that they would be overwhelmed by refugees and looters if they let people pass their blockade. That doesn't excuse their actions, but it does present another motive than "racism" that was divisively alleged.

All I said is that it wasn't likely racist.
And that the media presenting the race card was just to baselessly slander Bush, and Republicans in general.

  • from Do Racists have lower IQ's...

Liberals who bemoan discrimination, intolerance, restraint of Constitutional freedoms, and promotion of hatred toward various abberant minorities, have absolutely no problem with discriminating against, being intolerant of, restricting Constitutional freedoms of, and directing hate-filled scapegoat rhetoric against conservatives.

EXACTLY what they accuse Republicans/conservatives of doing, is EXACTLY what liberals/Democrats do themselves, to those who oppose their beliefs.

this happened all over the city, the people weren't allowed to leave on their own means and were threatened by guns and shot if they attempted to walk through. they talk about it in the spike lee documentary 'when the levees broke'

I can't take any 'facts' that Spike Lee presents as legit. He also claims that they purposefully blew the levees. He's full of shit.

It's called a curfew, where no one is allowed out after dark, and can be arrested if they leave their homes after dark.

I lived through it in Boca Raton in late October/early November for 13 days in 2005 after Hurricane Wilma tore our city apart and left us without power for 13 days. It took them 6 months to take away all the debris and cut-down trees. And I live in a very nice neighborhood, but after dark ther was no electricity, no street lights, and a lot of property damaged and open to looting.

For people used to assuming racism in every situation, I guess they would see it that way, when asked not to move around when there is limited visibility and plenty of opportunity for looting.
But I see it as trying to establish order after a disaster.

that might be called a curfew but that wasnt the case in new orleans. these people were left stranded on a bridge and wanted to walk into the next, safe town, during MID day, and were told they had to stay where they are. it had nothing to do with a curfew

id also like to add that some of the people, in the case of the people on the bridge, had been stuck there for days in 100 degree heat with no food or water, so it only made sense for them to get somewhere by foot. but they werent allowed to leave

that's just what they were making "on the books." the NOPD is one of the most notoriously corrupt in the US.

that makes me sad that you actually believe that. there were people who didn't know it was coming, which to many people might sound impossible but its fact. and people who did know it was coming, which most people did, couldn't afford to get out of the city, as they live pay check to paycheck, and dont have the means to go stay in a hotel, or get a bus out of the city, etc.

and besides the fact, the national guard dropped them off at the bridge, they didnt have a choice in being there

If they couldn't walk a few blocks to get to a bus then they deserve what they got. Its called darwinism. This is what scares me about the liberal mind set. I'm tired of people living off the government generation after generation and becoming so dependent on the almighty government that they can't even think for themselves.

I'm not saying it was right to shoot them when they were on the bridge but you have to know how to handle situations like this.
